The ORBYX Night was filled to capacity with over 250 guests. At its centre: an 11-metre dome soon to be shipped, together with a 2.5-metre mirror telescope by ASA Astrosysteme, to the Chilean highlands. There, in 2026, it will house Poland’s largest telescope at the new Rolf Chini Cerro Murphy Observatory.
From bricklayer to world leader: Egon Döberl’s telescope journey
Egon Döberl, founder of ASA Astrosysteme GmbH, shared his story – from apprentice bricklayer to globally recognised telescope manufacturer. Today, his company delivers high-end instruments to clients including the ESA and the US Air Force – made in Upper Austria.
Atacama: A window to the universe
Prof. Dr. Rolf Chini, initiator of the observatory, explained why Chile’s Atacama Desert is a paradise for astronomers: no light pollution, crystal-clear skies – ideal for long-term observations that capture the life cycles of stars.
From flying ships to star domes
Klaus Pichlbauer, CEO of INNOVAMETALL, described the remarkable origin of the dome: from the artistic Flying Ship installation at Linz’s Höhenrausch exhibition and a key encounter with Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev, to the cooperation with ASA. Within one year, the idea became reality – a robust, elegant telescope dome.
Quantum technology made simple
Dr. Martin Bohmann of QTLABS amazed the audience with insights into quantum communication: using photons to generate encryption keys that ensure absolutely secure data transfer – a principle that even Einstein found puzzling.
Music, BBQ & a view of the stars
The evening was charmingly hosted by Kati Hochhold, with musical accompaniment by 3 Sense featuring Carmen Thalhammer. Special guest and world champion Lizz Görgl joined the celebration, while grill world champion Geri Hochgatterer served culinary highlights from the iconic yellow BBQ bus.
Conclusion: The Mühlviertel goes interstellar
The ORBYX Night proved impressively that the Mühlviertel can do space. Technology, art and science merged into a success story with international reach. We’re still overwhelmed by the positive response and deeply grateful for the enthusiasm of our guests.
A TV report on the event will follow shortly.
