On September 17, 2024, the memorial “Five to Twelve. Unheard Resistance” was unveiled at OK-Platz in Linz. INNOVAMETALL brought the walk-in audio sculpture to life – honoring the courageous women who resisted the Nazi regime.
client
OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH. Each Saturday at five to twelve, the audio sculpture pays tribute to a woman with a powerful outcry – her name, location, and act of resistance are spoken aloud. The design takes up the visual form of sound waves expanding into space and creates a walkable ear canal. As visitors move through the sculpture, they hear the women’s names and their courageous acts of resistance.

- Mariel Rodriguez: “INNOVAMETALL was the only company we found that dared to take on the complexity of this construction.”
Challenge
The challenge for INNOVAMETALL was to technically implement the sculpture’s complex formal design. This required realizing the visual representation of sound waves in space as well as creating a walkable ear canal, allowing the names and actions of the women resistance fighters to be heard when passing through the sculpture.
Solution
The sculpture consists of three standing circles, each increasing in size and not fully closed, giving the impression of rising from the ground. It is hollow and reinforced by an inner structure that allows for the installation of technology, speakers, and sensors. Halogen spotlights were installed to illuminate the monument. The sound arches recall the form of a megaphone and invite visitors to enter, pass through, or linger in the “ear canal.”
Result
Three arches, ranging in height from 2.30 to 3.40 meters and with a total length of 5.60 meters, were placed with architectural precision on OK-Platz. The illuminated audio sculpture stands as a distinct form, appearing both elegant and dignified. The three rings symbolize sound waves. A motion sensor activates an audio file.
