Challenge
For Linz’s celebrated “Höhenrausch” festival, Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev envisioned The Flying Ship — an ambitious installation designed to float above the city’s rooftops as the event’s main attraction in 2018 and 2019.
Turning this artistic vision into reality required precision, courage, and imagination. INNOVAMETALL was tasked with transforming the concept into a 20-meter-long structure of steel and aluminum — a challenge that pushed the team’s engineering creativity and innovation far beyond the company’s traditional scope.
Solution
First, the artistic concept had to be transformed into a feasible 3D model with precise dimensions that fully reflected the artist’s creative vision. Within just two months — from tender to the opening of the exhibition — a ten-person team from INNOVAMETALL brought The Flying Ship to life.
Both its size and its spectacular installation drew attention: the 20-meter-long structure was lifted 25 meters above a rooftop car park, with the iconic wooden tower ingeniously integrated into the artwork as the ship’s mast.
Result
A flawless “Höhenrausch” — completed on time and engineered to perfection — was made possible through the close collaboration between artist Alexander Ponomarev, the OÖ Kulturquartier, and INNOVAMETALL.
Artist Alexander Ponomarev was so impressed by Klaus Pichlbauer, his team, and the realization of his vision that he personally traveled to Austria to attend the opening ceremony of the INNOVAMETALL plant in Niederkappel — the very place where The Flying Ship was built.
At the start of the project, the main challenge was to develop a technically feasible 3D model with defined dimensions based on the artist’s concept.
