Energy from your balcony

Commissioned by our partner WSO, we realized sybkon energy balconies for the very first time. The benefits speak for themselves: lower operating costs thanks to PV-generated electricity, greater efficiency compared to traditional balconies – and as a bonus, an eye-catching architectural feature.

client

Wien-Süd GmbH places great importance on modern living comfort as well as forward-looking and sustainable energy use. In Schwanenstadt, 117 affordable apartments were built by a subsidiary of the non-profit housing cooperative Wien-Süd. The use of photovoltaic modules (PV modules) on roofs and balconies provides an effective way to cover electricity needs while reducing environmental impact. This not only creates attractive living spaces but also supports the energy transition.

  • New build, housing cooperative Wien-Süd
  • sybkon energy balconies
  • 90 balconies = 61,2 kWp
  • Roof PV = 223 modules = 82,5 kWp
  • Tie-rod design, glass railings with integrated PV modules, balcony flat roofs with PV modules, rooftop PV system
  • 5 residential buildings equipped with energy balconies, constructed in three phases, three buildings feature rooftop PV systems

Challenge

The goal was to merge modern living standards with maximum energy efficiency. Balconies were to provide private outdoor space while actively contributing to the complex’s energy supply. Designed to capture solar power and lower operating costs, they also needed to meet high standards of sustainability and integrate seamlessly into the architecture – adding both comfort and visual value to the development.

Solution

sybkon energy balconies are distinguished by their fast and uncomplicated installation of prefabricated PV balconies, which can be used both in new buildings and in renovations. They allow for an almost construction-free implementation and are ready for use immediately after installation. Thanks to their vertical orientation, they reliably generate energy even in winter, as they remain free of snow and ice while making optimal use of the low-standing sun.

Result

This marks the first use of sybkon energy balconies in a 117-unit residential complex. Together with rooftop PV installations, the balconies generate around 300,000 kWh of electricity per year – covering roughly one-third of the site’s energy needs. Realized in three construction phases, five buildings were fitted with energy balconies and three with rooftop PV. The concept not only streamlines implementation and lowers operating costs but also gives the development a distinctive, attractive look.

The technical handling and practical implementation were easier than with conventional balconies. sybkon energy balconies also provide added value for tenants and, in addition, are a visual enhancement for our residential complexes.
