Where efficiency meets aesthetics

In the Berresgasse district, building-integrated energy generation is at the heart of an innovative energy concept: sybkon energy balconies form the centerpiece of WSO “Wien-Süd’s” residential project. Delivering 175 kWp in total, they enhance modern living comfort while lowering operating costs for residents.

client

The housing cooperative “Wien-Süd” is setting new standards in modern living with its forward-thinking energy concept for the new “Berresgasse” district. The project comprises 165 subsidized rental apartments, two commercial spaces, and twelve home-office units – combining future-ready housing with an innovative approach to energy generation.

Residential Project Vienna, Berresgasse (Vienna)

  • New build, housing cooperative “Wien-Süd”, 2024
  • sybkon energy balconies
  • 153 balconies = 1,300 linear meters of railing, including 878 linear meters of PV railing = total capacity of 175 kWp
  • Architecturally developed and designed with PV glazing, transitions and infill panels in sheet metal (agate grey), cast-in sybkon frames, laminated safety glass with integrated PV wafer, external cable ducts.
  • stair railings, glass railings, stainless steel cladding, steel staircase, canopies

Challenge

A key feature of this project is the integration of sybkon energy balconies along the façade. Altogether, 878 linear meters of PV-equipped balconies deliver a total output of 175 kWp – enough to cover the annual energy needs of around 125 single households. The electricity generated is used for general building power and, importantly, helps lower operating costs for residents in a sustainable way.

Solution

In contrast to conventional balcony power plants, the building-integrated PV balconies stand out not only for their energy efficiency but also for their appealing architectural integration into the façade. This approach makes it possible to keep the roof of the residential complex free, creating valuable green and recreational areas. These serve as communal terraces for the residents and provide space for urban gardening.

Result

A sustainable future project has been created. With this development, “Wien-Süd” is focusing not only on contemporary living comfort but also on sustainable and innovative energy use in the emerging Berresgasse district. Thanks to the use of sybkon energy balconies, the project is unique within the entire urban development area.

This project is distinguished by its innovative use of photovoltaic modules in balcony design. Integrating renewable energy into housing construction is not only sustainable – it also lends the entire development a forward-looking, modern aesthetic.
