Platform covered – overnight

ÖBB is already using sealed infrastructure surfaces to implement integrated PV solutions. At Sierndorf station, INNOVAMETALL installed bifacial monocrystalline PV panels. As a result, the platform now has a roof while also generating green electricity.

  • ÖBB Infra, 2021
  • PV platform roof
  • 120 m2 photovoltaic surface = 48 BIPV glass modules = 16,8 kWp

Challenge

The task: to design a platform canopy where BIPV glass modules generate solar energy overhead while also providing shelter from sun and rain. To achieve this, numerous factors had to be addressed – from slipstream forces and abrasion caused by overhead lines and braking, to special grounding for electrical safety. Just as important was a quick, precise installation to ensure rail operations remained uninterrupted.

Solution

INNOVAMETALL prefabricated four large canopy sections, which were lifted into place overnight by crane. To accommodate the curved platform, custom PV infill panels were added afterwards. Thanks to this approach, train services continued almost without disruption.

Result

What was once an uncovered station has been turned into a future-oriented showcase. As an ÖBB pilot project, it proves how photovoltaics can be seamlessly integrated into existing infrastructure – delivering both added value and a more sustainable future.

In Sierndorf, we delivered a model project for public infrastructure in record time. Combining energy, mobility, innovation, and revitalization, it points the way forward. Public transport offers enormous leverage for advancing the energy transition and integrating renewables. And passengers appreciate the modern design that doubles as both shelter and a small-scale power plant.
