What happens when you don't settle for standard?

Sometimes it all starts with a simple question:
Can you provide us with a shelter for bicycles?

That was exactly how Schiene OÖ – a subsidiary of OÖ Verkehrsholding GmbH – approached INNOVAMETALL.
The goal: to equip the new Park & Ride facility in Freistadt-Süd with a functional canopy while meeting the growing demands of modern, sustainable mobility.

But instead of simply delivering a standard shelter, close collaboration led to a customized concept that achieves much more – for both the commuters on site and the operator itself.

From request to joint solution: Site analysis and full potential unlocked

What began as a simple inquiry for a standard Model K glass canopy quickly turned into something bigger.
Already in the first discussion, it was clear – this site had far more to offer.

Together with Schiene OÖ, we explored what commuters really need from a modern Park & Ride facility and how to use the available space smartly and sustainably.

Our established process provided the framework:

  • Assessing the site and its usage patterns
  • Identifying technical and energy potential
  • Designing a modular, economical overall concept
  • Implementing the solution in close coordination with the client

The focus throughout: tangible benefits for commuters and long-term value for the operator.

In dialogue with Schiene OÖ, a holistic concept emerged – one that goes beyond pure functionality:

  • How can we make commuting more comfortable?
  • How can energy be generated and used directly on site?
  • How can we create lasting value for commuters, operators, and the environment?

The solution: protection, power and smart service in one system

The result is a tailor-made overall system for modern mobility and energy supply – delivering far more than just weather protection:

  • Energy generation: photovoltaic canopy with 8.4 kWp output
  • Energy storage: 30 kWh battery system with hybrid inverter
  • E-mobility: three charging points for long-term parking
  • Bicycle security: four lockable bike boxes with charging function and RFID access, plus 36 covered bike stands
  • Autonomous operation: lighting and system control powered by self-generated energy

Solar-powered savings

One of the key highlights: the “Charging with the Sun” tariff. At the Freistadt Park & Ride facility, vehicles are charged exclusively with locally produced solar energy – drawn directly from the PV canopy or the on-site battery. The result: lower operating costs, reduced grid strain, and sustainable charging at exceptionally fair rates – tailored to the long parking times of commuter vehicles.

Customer value: efficient, sustainable and ready for the future

For Schiene OÖ, the project delivers clear advantages:

  • A Park & Ride site that operates efficiently and economically
  • Additional revenue through locally generated solar power
  • A real contribution to regional climate goals
  • A scalable model that can guide future installations across Upper Austria

„Our goal wasn’t just to put up a roof – we wanted to create something that genuinely makes commuting easier.“
– Daniel Wagner, Product Manager INNOVAMETALL
